Meet Dr. Kirsten Smith, a wound care specialist in San Antonio

September 30, 2020

BRCA Location:

Burn and Reconstructive Centers of America at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, TX

Where were you born?

San Antonio

Where did you grow up?

San Antonio

Tell me about your family:

Finally, my whole family is back in Texas. My parents live in San Antonio, and my sister and her family recently moved to Houston from New York. I also have many friends who are non-blood family as well.  If you refer to me as KK’ (the name my nephews gave me that has stuck with all those near and dear to my heart), you are family. Oh, my dad – he’s a retired plastic surgeon. He’s truly my mentor, as we practiced wound care together until 3 years ago.”

What are your hobbies?

I collect art. I especially like to support local artists, but I am running out of wall space. I love to exercise when I find the time. Recently, I have started to do the Insanity workouts again. I enjoy exploring food and wine, as well.

Why did you choose burn care/BRCA?

I always wanted to do burns, but it was not possible here in San Antonio unless you were in the military until the CEO of Methodist Dan Miller said one day I think there is someone you should meet. I met Dr Mullins, and that was it.

What is your favorite part of your job? Your least favorite?

I love seeing the patients improve. I take pride in going the extra step to make sure the job is done right, and that keeps the patients coming back in the future with any new issues. They tend to refer their friends and family members to me, as well.

The worst part: The hours, inflexibility, and lack of vacation.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

My sense of responsibility and my alarm clock (after multiple snoozes). I set my alarm way earlier than needed – my family members are notoriously late, so I make sure that I am not.

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

Joining forces with BRCA is truly the most amazing thing. I am so excited to be able to build on my established wound care program and bring that knowledge and experience over to burns. It’s a dream come true.

What’s your favorite line from a film?

“Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” –Rocky Balboa
