Meet Dr. Neha Amin, a Burn Surgeon in Georgia

November 9, 2020

BRCA Location:
JMS Burn Center at WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell, GA

Where were you born and grow up?
“I was born and raised in New Jersey. I am a Jersey girl, through and through.”

Family:
“Most of my family is still back in New Jersey. But I have an amazing support system here with my husband, our very energetic 2-year-old, and my sister, who recently moved down here.

Hobbies:
“Right now, most of my hobbies center around keeping my 2-year-old entertained. But my husband and I are huge foodies. We love to discover and try new foods, as well as cook whenever we can. We also like to travel, which is the best way to try new foods and continue to learn and experience new things.

Why did you choose burn care/BRCA?
“I knew, as a second-year resident, that I loved critical care. I found myself more and more interested in all the new and innovative burn treatments, especially those that prove to have excellent outcomes. I really want to be a part of that growth and advancement in the burn and critical care field.

What is your favorite part of your job? Your least favorite?
“My favorite part of the job is definitely relieving pain and providing comfort to patients as quickly as I can. I also love following-up with patients and seeing them find their way back to normal after experiencing a life changing event. Conversely, I hate when we have to deliver bad news. A huge burn or complex wound is difficult on both the patient and their family. Every once in a while, we can’t save the patient, no matter how hard we try. That’s the worst.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?
“Usually, my 2-year-old screaming he wants to eat gets me out of bed in the morning. I have definitely had to learn how to become a morning person.

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?
“My biggest achievement was finishing surgical training, surviving a pregnancy and then a baby, all while moving away from my family. Through all of that, I still managed to pass all my boards, give multiple presentations at national conferences and, most excitingly, get published in the New England Journal of Medicine. What a dream!

What is on your wishlist for the next 5 years?
“I want to help grow the Atlanta center and to grow professionally in the burn community on a national level.
